A fasinating book of life and death on the USS Yorktown... A "must read" for all those interested in first hand accounts of America's struggle in the Pacific!

I Remember The Yorktown

USS Yorktown, a 19,800 ton aircraft carrier built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned on 30 September 1937.

Two weeks after the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Yorktown transited the Panama Canal to reinforce the badly damaged Pacific Fleet.

This book tells the story of my experiences on the USS Yorktown.  My name is Eugene Domienik, and I served on the Yorktown from November 1941, until the time it sank in The Battle of Midway in June 1942. This is the story of what I heard, what I saw and what I remember. I am writing this story sixty plus years since two great battles took place: The Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway.  I hope that what I write here will inspire others who were in those battles to write their stories also.

This is a story about a ship; about men who served aboard her, their behavior in battle; their ability to fight boredom; their contribution to the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway; their struggle to maintain confidence in themselves; their capability to die; their hopes; their inspirations; their longings; their gift too, to love the ship.

Little has been written about the valor shown by the men of damage control. This book tells something about their significance, how they fought to keep the ship afloat, to put out the fires and help with the wounded.

Although Yorktown was not alone in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, her contribution to both battles was of great importance.  Without the Yorktown, the two battles would likely have been lost.  Australia and the West Coast of America would then have faced a possible attack by the Japanese Empire.

Americans living today should appreciate the significance of the battles of the Coral Sea and of Midway.  I hope this book will allow them to understand more deeply the reason for our being there and to derive a sense of appreciation for being an American.
